The following link is usefull in determining if existing equipment you own (or plan to purchase)meets the NIST regulations for scales that are used for buying and selling of a commodity or product by weight.

Most state weights and measures bureaus require that scales to be used for commercial use be NTEP approved.

NTEP is the National Type Evaluation Program.

If your state participates in this program, you must use approved equipment.
