The mag simply runs the ignition, it has nothing to do with the battery or charging system.
The unit you have, used to have 2 - 6 volt batterys installed beside each other.
I had to rebuild one of these for a display for a large firm here. I was their first welder some 40 years prior. A coil in the generator charged them through a Rectified grid.
The only thing to be concerned with is the starter, if it is a 6 volt starter, you'll cook it quickly if you hold that starter button in for longer that 4 seconds. 6 volt starters are big bucks.
