Currently there are a number of stepper motor drivers on ebay. Go to Industrial Equipment and just use the key word "Step*" the star denotes that any word starting with step is included in the search: stepping, stepper, etc. some of the controllers are minimal pcb boards which typically close auction for around $35.00Stepper motors are extremely sturdy, there are no brushes, so they can handle being over volted as long as the power isn't sustained. Just touch them to ensure they are not overheating from time to time during prototyping and they should be fine. The only major concern is overheating the Op-Amps in the controller. The minimal controllers come with instructions discussing this. Don't be afraid to experiment.
