Hello,

I am presently working on a project on the magnetic control of the TIG welding arc using an externally applied magnetic field.For this I plan to install an electromagnet around the welding electrode(25 mm dia) to generate a magnetic field in the range of 20 to 100 gauss in a gap of 20 mm in order to deviate and oscillate the arc.
A few questions-:

1) I need to be able to generate both simple and alternating magnetic fields (using DC and AC respectively).How do I ensure that my electromagnet would
be able to do this?

2)I need to focus/direct the magnetic field generated by the coil of the electromagnet to the arc gap of 20 mm. I am planning to do this using an inclined focussing steel piece. Will this work and if it can, how do I go about fixing this to the electromagnet without damaging the magnetic properties of the magnet?
