Thanks to you both for your replies. Finally(sorry to go on, but it seems hard to find information on conventionl turning of steel)am I correct in thinking that a skilled Turner could produce items such as camshafts and crankshafts from bar stock on a conventional lathe (non CNC)?Also what was the shape of the bar stock prior to turning.Would the mold/casting already be round or would it be rectangular. Also how long would it take to turn a camshaft for example?

Thanks alot for all your replies to date!!
