I have just read all your posting and answers and find the answers offered as simplistic. I have worked in a shop where there were large vertical lathes starting at 36" in diameter chuck to a 16 foot diameter table with a swing of 21 feet. I can assure you a person with limited experience would not be used on these larger machines due to the cost of the part and the equipment. Even picking up the part weighing up to 50 tons would not be given to the inexperienced operator. The machines I have described were not CNC equipment which would be the norm today. Depending on what type of experience this turner has and job responsibilities it would be a better point to investigate as the different jobs through out the machining industry has changed dramatically in the last 20 years.
