Let's think though:
1) Have you checked for a blown fuse? Of course that could be hard without a resistance checker:)
2) The process is to apply a voltage across the resistor and measure the current (or vic versa). Do you have a voltage coming out of the terminals in the resistance mode?
The older digital multimeters just digitized a voltage that was generated by some analog circutry. Perhaps you could track down the drive; or if that works, apply a voltage to the terminals in resistance mode and try to track down a bad part.
Did this make sense to you?
I actually wouldn't put much hope in just poking around; but if you want a hobby.
