I have thought a little; I think that you will have to tear down a unit and examine the circuit in detail. Usually the parts used are sufficient to see how it was done.
An alternative is to go back in history and contact one of the Company Officers (who would be listed on company documents) and then get a contact who can give you detailed information. Most people are cooperative about things they used to make and can no longer support.
This is just generic; I have no knowledge of the device in question.
