I don't have any real help to give. Since it's school work I would just use a levered "microswitch" to detect the ball in place. These are typically limit switches from Switchcraft or some such. Then make the pusher from a solenoid.
In a real world application either optical (which gets dirty) or capacitative sensing would be used in order to last longer. The solenoid would probably still be used.
I don't what to tell you about controlling the ball return so that it goes back to the user. There is the possibility of some clever technique there.
