Most Hammonds of that era used tone wheels to develop the tones rather than electronic oscillators. It may be nothing more than a lubrication of the drive motor or checking the starting circuit.

I can't agree with the Hammond sound. But that's personal preference, of course. I'm a classical pipe organ kind of guy, and if it's going to be electronic, it better have the name Allen or Rodgers on it, preferably Allen. Hammonds (and most other home organs) sound like electronic organs rather than pipe organs.
