I had very little feedback on this subject except refs to QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation). This seems to be the nub of things because it enables a bit-rate of up to 28.8 kbps with a baud rate bandwidth limited to ~3.4 k.Hz Downloading at 56kbps is not done by your modem.

Apparently a modem can also do data compression.

I found a good tutorial on QAM by searching n "Ask Jeeves"
