I think you are probably on the right track. Could you
describe the actual actual emitter follower values? You
do need an emitter resistor and also do some simple
equivalent calculations. OPen circuit conditions (when
the xsistor is off) and opposite circuit conditions (when
the xsistor is on. The later needs the current sunk when
the circuit is in the light position.
There are other problems with this simple circuit; if the
rise and fall times are to slow the counter might have
spurious counts. The way to get around this is using a
buffer with hysteresis.
