In this day and age:
1) Check a chip manufactures app notes, for instance

I would fuse the input circuit to prevent overloads due to higher than speced currents or inadvertant ohms measurements of powered circuits.
Of course you might find a better chip. I tried Fluke but they don't seem to be offering thier chipset.
