I'd suggest the TDR method if this is a commonly-occurring problem. Although new instruments are expensive, a Tektronix 1503 that you may find on ebay will do the job nicely for up to 20,000 feet of cable. However, DO NOT get the 1502 TDR. It is a much more delicate instrument and most likely the ones you find on ebay will have blown sampling bridges and tunnel diodes, requiring hundreds of dollars to repair.
