I use that particular project to demonstrate a
simple fact that only about 10-40% of the
circuits/systems you work on ever get to market.
I was asked to design it by my boss. I designed
it and built a working prototype in discrete
analog and CMOS.
The marketing people looked at it and it's
advantages (ease of installation and flexability)
and killed it. The reason was that our real
customers were distributors that made thier money
on installations. This design would have
eliminated most of that and they wouldn't have
sold it.
Live and learn: In this case, know your real customer.
There are many other ways for projects to go
astray.
