I recently watched this television program about someone that made custom Harley Davidson choppers and he made his own cusom gas tanks for these motorcycles in both aluminum and steel. He would use pneumatic hammers and old cold metal working tools to shape each half of a tank and then weld them together.

My question is... would it be easier and make a higher quality tank if you were to stamp each half of the tank using a mold and metal sheets and stamping the shape then weld them together?

Would this be possible for a small shop or is it too difficult and expensive to work with steel in this way on a small scale?
