I may sound like an old git, but it takes a while.

I use surface mount, so the package is specified by suppliers such as Farnell, RS, etc.

Generally capacitors are 0805 package and so are resistors. Electrolytic caps tend to be TANT-A (-B, -C, etc).

When using new components I design the pad, print it off and see how it lines up with the real component.

You'd be amazed how many suppliers use their own weird package sizes!
