I think most fiducial marks are usually circular pads. Fiducial marks are used for x,y coordinate references.
So, in my personal opinion, diamond shape can be good. Or you can add some cross silkscreen on the circular fiducial to match center of the circular pad. ( Don't ovewright silkscreen on the pad itself.)
