Kevin,
My company just recently switched from Protel to Cadence which bought out OrCad. We were force to switched because of problems we experinced with Protel and the ever increasing complexity of our boards.
When updating layouts and schematics ECO or ECN take your pick, we found our netlist did not always matchup. We called Protel which offers free support which is usually very slow but you can not complain if it is free. Any way when we tried what they suggested we still had problems. Since this time we have found a user group and found many people having problems with Protel. In fact by there own admission they state to check the net list. This is why you buy the tool you shouldn't have to check the list.
We also heard on the user group of people having trouble doing boards with more than four layers.
My suggestion is if your boards will be simple two sided designs go with Protel if you will get into more complex boards and really want to simulate pay the extra bucks and get a top notch tool. Keep in mind with Cadence you can import many different packages and most everyone has an export for OrCad (Cadence)
