Well Ron,
There are 1499 Certified IPC designers.
I would say about ten percent are certified.
so that puts total numbers at about 15000.
I would estimate in any event there are no more than 100000 PCB designers world wide.
When you look at the total number of "seats" fromt he big EDA CAD vendors 100000 seems on the high side. One might consider that each designer may have more than one seat and that not all the seats are used by designers.
The circulation for Printed Circuit Design magazine is on the order of 27,246
I would say almost all PCB designers subscribe to this publication or should be. However many engineers and managers do as well. So I think
the bottom line is on the order of about 15000 designers with a fraction of those doing most of the day to day design tasks. The remainder are most likely part timers who do a board once in a while for there own engineering projects.
Of course this is just an edjucated guestimate.
When you want to hire a good designer there are never enough and when your looking for a good design job there are to many!
