I'm not a graphics person, so I've learned by trial and error. I have an HP Officejet G85 which I can control from my PC (HP Pavilion - Windows 2000ME). I found that by opening the control box for the G85 on my desk top I could open "My pictures" via the printer/scanner. I then select the bmp picture and clicked on open.

The picture opens up in "HP Image Editor" In "Image Editor " I then select "File" and "Save as". "Save As" gives a range of alternatives including jpg.

I now have the picture in two formats - bmp and jpg.

It works with my equipment, if your scanner can do something similar you may be able to adapt my procedure. Hope this is of help.
