1. Forget the heat, we are looking for voltage gain, not power gain.

2. It seems evident that a source resistance will increase the drain output resistance, but it will also reduce the gain. The advantage of the source resistor is that the gain can be approximated by RL/RS, where RL is the drain load resistor and RS is the source resistor.
