I am not computer literate, so can't help too much. This site will explain the difference between the RS232 standard and the communications interface. You need to know how the computer wants to see the data: binary, BCD or hexadecimal or what. Also should the data be NRZ or manchester coded. The software documentation should spell out the requirements.
