The fan motor is probably an AC type so the diode will make it not run. The problem is most likely due to the magnetic field around the fan. The fan is no doubt in a plastic case which does not provide any shielding. Puting the fan motor in a metal box, or even rapping it with aluminium foil will no doubt solve that problem but cause another one: the fan will overheat. If you can find an old fashioned metal fan, that should work best.
