I can see your point about dud shifts messing up the count. Sensors on the input and output sides seem to be the best idea, as legaly I cant tap and drill into the transmition case or it'll fail inspection.

As for the sensors, would it be possible to use the ignition coil pulses as the "input" for the system, as this signal will be directly proportional to engine rpm? The motor is a 6 cylinder, thus giving 6 pulses per revolution. Also, how would neutral be picked up? If possible i would like to add a lockout to disable the starter solenoid if neutral is not selected
