I'm trying to design a circuit to indicate the current gear for an old sequentialy shifted manual gearbox. I've done a bit of electronics before but nothing major, so was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction.

I am going to use two microswitches to provide momentary up or down pulses, and want the output to read on a bank of 6 led's (rev, neutral and 4 forward gears.) I've had a look at the local library etc but i cant find anything that works. Had a go at designing a circuit myself using flip-flops, but i couldnt get it to work properly

Can anyone give me a vague idea of how i can make this work?
