Sometime back in the Eisenhower-Kennedy years, there was an article in Scientific American about the properties of the mathematical expression " 1 + x ". I remember trying to read it back then and not understanding much of anything.

Recently, I've tried to find that article, but with no success. The index records at the magazine itself seem not to go back that far and two librarians have been unable to find it.

Does anyone out there know how I could find that article?
