I do not beleieve that here is the proper medium to go into all the pros, cons, and countless configurations involved when implementating compression techniques. There is just too much material for me to sit here and type up. I suggest that you check out the "Compandor Cookbook" section available on the Web. It is buried in the Signetics sub-section of Philips (the parent of Signetics). Another excellent practical reference is the "Audio Cyclopedia" by Howard Tremaine, where there are many variations discussed. Any good Public Library should have a copy. The ARRL Handbook also has some information, although this tends to be more involved with limiting overmodulation than true audio applications.

I am not trying to be condescending when I suggest this, but I feel that it is a field which is too interesting to be glossed over as "a sort of automatic volume control", and the range of potential applications is also too great to be described as "Peak & Valley smoothing".

I hope that this may be of some help.
