As for the MOV, I foolishly assumed that the guy I was talking to at the electronics store was like the other two that work there and know thier stuff inside and out....and the way he explained it was that it would allow current to flow up to a certain voltage, then it just wouldn't let more than that pass through....

As for the inverter not working, it works great until the voltage spikes above the 12V needed to run it....at that point I think what happens is that it has built in protection and it cuts out for a second or two....but that's just my hunch...
