An opto coupler would be the best way to isolate the two circuits and allow data communication. Most opto couplers are non linear, but if you are using logic levels, this will not be a problem. It is my understanding that neither side of the telephone line is ground. This allows the use of a phantom circuit that uses the earth as one of the conductors.
