I am trying to design a lap counting system for radio controlled model cars.

I have been experimenting with radio transmitters with no luck, as I can't seem to get the range short enough to be reliable.

What I'm really after is some form of triggering/firing a coil overhead or below the passing object.

I have also tried infra red but it is too directional to work reliably.
