Hi John,
You are exactly correct. I had forgotten about the leakage current, and the possibility of noise causing timing problems. On further thought even if a 10M resistor and about 33uf were used the leakage current would be great enough to prevent the capacitor from charging to the point necessary to trip the comparator in the 555. Your approach is the best yet
