Using a LM3886 is not so overkilled, Russ. It is a good idea to use it as a driver because of its relative high voltage handling capabilities, which you can not by far reach with an LM386. A similar idea is used here: http://www.elektroda.pl/audio/audio.html

I know it is in polish, but you can get the idea from the schematic.
With LM3886 and big transistors you can get a lot of power. BUT you can also obtain it bridging/paralleling several LM3886. Have a look at:
