Think of a line of billiard balls, if you fire one into the start of the line one flies off the far end - electricity is very much like this - it is the effect that travels the distance not the actual electrons.

You need some basic physics/electronics reading to get a grip of the concepts.

"Earth" potential is a sink and a source for all electrical connections to it.
