What all would I need to create a 10 led blinker?...heres my scenario, it's a bit complicated....

I need to add a light flashing down 2 rows of 5...it goes, then bounces back...whenever I tap a switch on.....the switch will only be on for not even a second, and I want to adjust the speed of the movement of the lights...I have very little experience in electronics...so far I've only tapped into electronics and added like, reed relays to make blinking lights.

It's for a paintball marker...I want to be able to add effects to it, and later, I want to be able to tell time between two fires and estimate the balls per second I'm shooting and display it on the back of the electronics housing...=) usually this number is in the lower double digits.

Could anyone lead me to any places which feature small little things like this to aid my adventure in electronics?...also I wouldn't mind being able to make something programmable later on.
