The 555 will work fine.

Easier than the 555 is to use the
LM3909 : LED flasher chip
from
National Semiconductor.
You used to be able to get it from
Radio Shack
http://radioshack.com/
or
DigiKey
http://www.digikey.com/
but apparently they stopped making it in 1998.
