Thomas, I don't know if your still working on your project but I've been looking for the same
detector. The device you describe sounds like a Radonalert meter which I happen to have.
I believe the solid state device you describe is in fact an alpha sensitive junction. I queried
the guy making them a few years ago and he was understandably not helpful with informat-
ion about his source. Have you pursued it? I have essentially the need to do some radon
measurements and would like to build several more. By the way my Radonalert is still work-
ing well as far as I can tell. I do on occasion back it up with carbon canister measurements.
