I'd really caution you against trying this out! Some "ordinary" battery chemistrys are irreversible and attempted recharging will not only fail, I've been told such attempts can even be dangerous because of possible explosion!

Please take a look at the literature from Linear Technology and Maxim among others. They have spent a lot of time developing products for battery charging where the subject batteries are designed to be recharged.
