Jay,

The Electronics industry bar code label standard is administered by the Consumer Electronic Association R9 committee (www.ce.org). The industry standard is CEA-802 – Product Marking Standard (was EIA-802). The document is available from Global Engineering Documents (http://global.ihs.com)

Note that Bellcore is now Telcordia Technologies, Inc. The standard that Jim Williams is referring to is GR-383-CORE which I maintain. There is also a product marking guideline from the Telecommunications Industry Forum (TCIF - go to www.atis.org and click on Document Store) - TCIF-00-003 - Product Marking Implementation Guideline.

For linear bar codes, 7.5 mil narrow bar (X-dimension) is recommended. For 2D symbols, a 5 mil (X) symbol is acceptable. For component marking in a closed environment, a 3 mil (X) symbol can be used.

The 2nd paragraph of Jim Williams comments are
