Bar codes scan based on the differences in absorption/reflectance of light, between the colors, at the wavelength of light used by the scanners. For example, some colors may look weird to you in visible light, but to an infrared scanner, they look literally "black and white". One of the keys is Print Contrast Signal, a ratio which measures the reflectance difference between the two contrasting colors chosen.
