I am catching up on the state-of-the-art in PCB CAD, esp. generation of drill programs. Back in the 80's I ran a project to optimize drill programs for a PCB fabrication shop - on average we shortened the drill paths by 50%. Since tool movement typically accounted for 30% of the drilling processing time, we estimated this gave us a 15% capacity increase with NO capital outlay.

Since then, I assumed that drill path optimization would be embedded in PCB CAD systems - however, I recently downloaded some sample programs and they were as bad as the ones I saw 20 years ago!

I have resurrected my old project using up-to-date software tools, and would be interested in working with any PCB manufacturer that would like to try this method.
