Depends on the machines vision system, some prefer crosses, others prefer double crosses etc.. but all of those I know will work with just about anything.

You just have to try it out. One thing I have noticed though, is that certain flip chip and BGA manufacturers use crosses at opposite corners of the component. This is really good to use instead of spending a lot of time defining the whole component in the vision system.
