Try the Microchip web site, they manufacture the PIC micros that are the most popular microcontroller. Their site has free IDE software and assembler plus you can request free samples of the chips.
I would recommend their 12F series as you only need +5v and ground (if you use its internal clock). They have ADCs, comparators and can drive LEDs direct.
