Tim,
This is a very complex subject, producers of H. 13 recommend case depths of 50-70µm most jobbing shops do not have adequate control over their case depths. In my case I always send them a rectangular sample with each nitride load, when the load is returned I surface grind track through the rectangular sample, watching for the spark to change from dull red to yellow, at this point a quick check with a small standard needle file will tell whether you have penetrated the case, the depth of track can then be measured . Where case depths exceed 100µm spalling will occur on the extrusion die, surface finish will be hard to maintain, and the die will cease to repeat.
