Dear Andy, Any machining that yopu do to the casting will induce surface stresses. Also, you do not say anything about the shape and complexity of the casting. Where you have varying cross sectional thicknesses, you will have diferrential cooling rates when the casting cools after the pour. If the material is in a heat treated condition, you need to take care in the temperature selection so that you do not exceed the artificial ager harden condition. I don't honestly know off the top of my head, the chemistry of the LM 24 material. If you did do a stress relieve operation,I would recommend a temperature no higher than around 350F otherwise you may begin to over age the part. Hope that this helps you, please contact if you require further help. Please view our web page at www.pyemet.com I will be out of the office from tomorrow until Tuesday morning 20th Nov. Best Regards, David
