David,

I can't answer that one. I am trying to understand a process that one of our vendors is using on parts of our design.
Initially we had designed the part to be made from 4340 with a through harden and temper. The company making the parts suggested we take advantage of their proven experience with the 4140H Austempered.
Their reputation and experience in the field we work in is fantastic, so I was comfortable to do so.
Now I am trying to unedrstand the limits and peculiarities of the Austemper process in an effort to establish what we could have done differently.
Making the piece heavier, will probably eliminate the risk of failure, which was through radial spokes between lightening holes.
If I am able to get an answer to your question, I will forward it.
If the problem is a process error, I am not sure the vendor would be aware of it, they are unlikely to have completed our order of parts if they were suspicious the process was risky on our geometry.
I appreciate your input and intend to continue researching this to reach an acceptable understanding.

Regards

Hayden
