What was the austenitizing temperature of the parts prior to austempering. The austemper temperature seems low for 4140 at 430F. That would be more like a marquench. The MS point on 4140 is approximatly 650F on the isothermal temperature transformation diagram. The structure that you have is probably untempered martensite and not bainite.Hence the brittle failure fracture.
