Dear Mr. Laur,
You could use a 4140 material and harden it from approximatly 1550F and oil quench. When cold, if you are able to check hardness, you should have around 52 to 55 Hrc. Then you would need to temper it at between 600 F and 650F to get a hardness value around 42 Hrc. That is almost like a spring hardness.
