Building your own computer can be a good experience if you do it in simple steps. First..the CPU speed. The difference in real time between a 500 mhz and a 900 mhz is only an eyeblink. In todays technology, the 500 will perform very well. Hard drives are similar but but get a formatted one. A 20 GN is abouty right for tadays standard. A CDWR and DVD drive is a nice combination to have in drive selections. Roam should be a min of 128 MB. Video card should be 8 or 16 MB onboard cashe. for fast and smooth operation especially in full motion mode. Get a good sound card with good speakers. Sound Blaster is a good one. Preview your monitor before you buy it. Picture quality varies greatly between monitors. Your modem should be a voice modem 56 K and if you want to connect to a DSL or cable modem get an ether net card. Now..make sure you have simple step by step instructions and you understand them throughly before you start. It is nut and bolt and plug and play time. Install the hard components and plug them together. and then install the software. that is it. Good luck.
