Try removing the lid and gently running the scanner from end to end (with the power off) with your hand. Do not touch the bulb. See if there is any resistance when you manually move it from end to end. Finally, put the scanner (the section with the bulb) all the way at the bottom of the unit (the section opposite from the area where the lid hinges are). Power it back up and see if it still does it. There isnt much to these units. Its could be a bad sensor but pretty unlikely.
